Network Topologies – Data Communication

Network topology is the arrangement of the elements of a communication network.

Bus Topology

It is a topology for local area network in which all the nodes are connected to a single cable.
  • No. of Cables = n+1
  • No. of Ports = 1 (each)
  • Total Ports = n

Ring Topology

In this topology each node connects to exactly two other nodes, morning a single continueous pathway for signal through each node.
  • No. of Cables = n
  • No. of ports = 2 ( each)
  • Total Ports = 2n

Star Topology

In this topology, all nodes are individually connected to a central connection point like a hub or a switch.
  • No. of Cables = n
  • No. of Ports = 1 (each)
  • Total Ports = 2n

Mesh Topology

In this topology, each node is interconnected with one another.
  • No. of Cables => n(n-1)/2
  • No. of Ports => n-1 (each device)
  • Total Ports => n(n-1)

Tree Topology
