The transfer of data or information between sender and receiver.

A Network is the group of two or more computer or other electronic devices that are interconnected for the purpose of exchanging data and sharing the resources.

Types of Network

  1. PAN(Personal Area Network)
  2. LAN(Local Area Network)
  3. MAN(Metropolitan Area Network)
  4. WAN(Wide Area Network)

1. PAN (Personal Area Network)

It is a type of network which allows communication between computer devices near a person. It can be wired like USB, Firewire or Wireless such as infrared, Bluetooth etc.

Advantage of PAN

  • No extra wire or connection required.
  • Cost effective.
  • Easy to use.
  • Reliable.
  • Secure.
  • Connect too many devices at a time.

Disadvantage of PAN

  • Less distance range.
  • Interfere with radio signals.
  • Slow data transfer.

2. LAN (Local Area Network)

It is a group of computers or devices that interconnected within a single, limited area, especially one within a radius of less than 1 KM .

Advantage of LAN

  • Centralized System.
  • Easy and fast communication.
  • Data Security.
  • Sharing resources.
  • Cover small area.

Disadvantage of LAN

  • Expansive.
  • Cover small area.
  • Need maintenance on regular basis.
  • Not much secure.

3. MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)

It is the extended version of Local area network. Metropolitan area network are formed by connecting multiple LANs. It is a class network which serves a large geographical area between 5 to 50 KM in range.

Advantage of MAN

  • Higher speed.
  • High security.
  • Conversion from LANs to MAN is easy.
  • Less expensive.
  • Very centralized.

Disadvantage of MAN

  • Difficult to manage.
  • More wired and connection required.
  • High chances of data breach.

4. WAN (Wide Area Network)

It is a type of network that exists over a large scale geographical area, as compared to other type of network system. WANs connects different smaller networks including local area network and metropolitan area network so that computers and users in one location can easily communicate with computers and users in other location.

Advantage of WAN

  • Centralized data system.
  • Sharing of software and resources.
  • Global business access.
  • High bandwidth.
  • Work over live server.

Disadvantage of WAN

  • Security issue.
  • High cost.
  • High maintenance.
  • Connectivity issue.
